Listen: Subconscious Self-expression

Jennifer Jean Okumura grew up in Philadelphia. With access to a good art community, opportunities arose for her to grow as an artist. As one will hear in the audio story, many aspects of her life have influenced the work she produces - the biggest one being her Japanese, Irish, and Polish heritage. Okumura attended Syracuse University and received her MFA from Boston University. Since then she has worked as a gallery director, operations manager, adjunct educator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and fine art consultant.

For the audio story below, I visited Okumura at her SoWa art studio and spoke with her about the self-expression in her art.

Jennifer Jean Okumura’s SoWa studio is an intimate showcase of her work. She shared the studio with two other artists Mia Cross and Sorin Bica (who is featured in the video story).
